My Leadership Video: Assignment Outline for NITIE IM 18 students

What this video is assignment all about? 

PGDIM 18 student at NITIE Mumbai are taking  Corporate Leadership Development course during Sep – Dec 2012.  As part of learning this course students  are assigned  to develop a leadership video on themselves,  by themselves on the theme ‘My Leadership'.  

Why leadership video of students and by the students?

Leadership Video of the students and by the students provides an opportunity for the students  to understand the concept of leadership as applied to themselves. As emerging Young Leaders students better understand the concept when it is applied to them. Video making  helps the students to leverage the learning process for their Placement activity. In a nutshell, this process of learning achieves the following.  
  Learning + Leadership  =  Better Placement 

Goals / Objectives  
§   Enable the students to develop an idea about their  Leadership
§  Prepare and help the students in their Placement process

Focus of the video

Focus of the leadership video is SPECIFIC.  Student are supposed to make the video keeping in view their  ‘ Placement Season ’  Dec 2012 @ NITIE Mumbai. The video they made help them to share their leadership to potential employer company. 

Content of the Video:
§  
 aExplore and understand what kind of leadership corporates expect from a MBA student ?
§  Explore and understand what competencies the dream position the student  is aspiring  for ?
§  Explore and understand what leadership  competencies one possess / demonstrated / developing?
§  Brief account of convincing evidences and instances where the student demonstrated such leadership ?
What kind of future leadership the student would like to grow in future? 
§  Explore and understand how to present ones case of leadership to  the prospective corporate?

General Guidelines for Video making  

Video should be made exclusively for the leadership course
Active presence of the student in the video is a must.
Student need to make his / her video assuming a dream company and dream position. No restrictions are envisaged for the list of companies and dream jobs one can imagine.
Suggested length of the video is in the range of 8 - 10 min. duration
Students must take care for Quality and impact of their video. 
No technical detailing of video making is felt necessary. It is left to the students to format right kind of videos for the purpose.

 One  Common video channel will be opened on the You Tube for all the 120 students to post their You Tube videos. All the IM 18 batch students will be shared with the UPLOAD procedure for uploading their leadership videos on You Tube. 

Your leadership Video quality- Bench marking

Minimum Video  quality should be  worth posting it on  social networks ex., LINKED IN PROFILE / YOU TUBE / FACEBOOK  of the students  where in students get placement  offers as the prospective employers watch the videos and invite them for a placement opportunity.

Submission Mode
Students are advised to embed their videos onto their individual student Blogs.  A master list of the videos will be submitted by the Class Representative on due date.

Assessment – 25 percentage weight will be given. Student Leadership Videos will be assessed on the following criteria.
§  Understanding of the concept of Leadership
   Leadership profile of the student
§  Quality of  presentation

   Disclaimer : Purpose of students making their own  leadership videos is learning exercise. It is the students who are responsible and supposed to take care of the problems and risks associated with working on the assignment. Faculty member assume NO  responsibility for any problems and risks arising out of working such an assignment. 
Submission Date: Nov 5th 0600 hours. 

LEADERSHIP VIDEOS - FEEDBACK  

1.  Most of the students are READERS  ( Wthether they are L E A D E R S is question mark ! ) 
2. Most of the students are the same .. not much of difference. It is unfortunate that at this level students are not different. They talk so much about creativity and innovation .. But they are the same duplicates..
3. Instances they talk, examples they quote, the way they speak, is the same.. 
Most  students DO NOT show energy, enthu, conviction while they speak. They are NOT ORIGINAL but they are carbon copies.. 
Most of the students are Casual and light while they speak about their own leadership... 

Most of the students take the assignment as A S S I G N M E N T..They do not consider as learning method for themselves.  It is unfortunate .. 

Most of the students are late submissions, short duration, and  lacks overall theme for the presentation and the  vidoes.. 



GOOD THINGS: 


Some are unique, natural and different.. Leadership is visible in their faces..

Leadership concept as applies to me; Assignment 2 for IM 18 students

Dear IM 18 Students 
It is pleasure to visit your blog posts for the second assignment on the theme mentioned above. As I see the blog posts wrote by you,  I thought I have not communicated the purpose of the blog to you all 100 percentage. Hence, I m posting this blog post again making clear the purpose of the blog post.. 
I wish to take an example of ‘Selecting a garment for yourself ‘ for communicating the theme ‘Leadership concept as applies to you’ assignment. This is as following.


To select a garment…  you go to a shop and look for the garments. There will be many a models displayed there.  You see as many garment models around while you are finalizing the garment for you. You see Dhoni wearing garment. You may also see  SRK wearing a garment. These models help you in selecting the best garment for you.. The garments that you see may be of many sizes  and many colours and many designs and  many styles.
Finally, you select the garment which best fits you. The thing you keep in mind is to select the garment that best FITS you.  You don’t select the garment which does not fit you.
 
 

Same as above, you are asked to write the leadership that fits you.. that is required for you now, at this time juncture of your life. Intention is to make you to be aware of what leadership that matters most to you at this time. Do not forget that at this juncture of  your life you are getting in to corporate career as a management trainee. 
My feedback on the blog posts  you posted 'Leadership theme for me'. . .   is as follows:
Students while writing the blog posts, are focused on many garment models that are there in the shop. They are writing on the garment models that they are seeing in the shoop.   Students are writing on the best model of garment that they are seeing in the shop. They are not discussing how the model that they are writing is best suited to them. They are not thinking whether that fits them or not.  They are not at all looking at the garment from the point of themselves and their needs. 

Please remember, that the garment need to suit you:

It must be according to your requirements, It must be according to the look that you want to display. It must be according to the budget you are blessed with....  
 
This is what I found and thought I should convey to you all. 
What are the problems in arriving at the leadership as suited to them ?
It is agreed that it is difficult to decide for a student to decide the leadership that fits one. But one has to make a beginning of what leadership fits for oneself. Unless a beginning is made, it cannot be ever achieved.  
What cautions the students need to take while discussing the leadership that is suitable for themselves ?
What is the career path you are looking for ? 

( If one wants to play the role of Manager, he need to pick up the manager dress not bafoons dress... or a waiter dress. Same applies in picking up the leadership for a  marketing or supply chain manager's role.. You need to think on what is the leadership that matters to the career that you are going to pick up.. )

What is the kind of industry you are planning to jump in ? What kind of leadership makes difference to achieve excellence in those career paths ? Have you made any research on this ? Have you consulted people for which type of leadership is suitable for the said roles and careers and more particularly to you ? These are the set of questions that you need to engage in.
Some suggestions for a student to arrive the leadership relevant for oneself
Explore one self. Open up. Scan yourself. Self reflection is the most important.
Consult people around you. Consult your seniors / mentors  / angels.  Take their advice on what are you? What is the best for you? However, final decision is  yours only .
Don’t mistake  that selecting best fit for you is knowing the best fit for others. Don’t believe  that  a garment that best fits others fits you best. Need not be.. 
Wish you select the garment for you.

MY Leadership - Studnet Write ups Analysis

My Leadership - Student write ups

Part of IM 18 Leadership development course students are asked to write their leadership in FIVE sentences. Students submitted their leadership on a paper. Below are select student write ups. The write ups are analyzed for Leadership.

Student 1:  I am a leader. I think the most important quality of a leader is to find the right resources, right people. Understanding the process and the target but I also keep a tract on the people directly and indirectly associated as a leader always is said so when there are people with him. I have the ability to convince people and sense others  needs.

Another important quality I have is understand the situation and having the knowledge about things I do even though I don't, then i make it point a to know it thoroughly.

Student 2 :  Leadership to me is about vision for the future. A leader should have foresight. He / she should have skills to innovate. a good leader should set realistic goals and inspire his followers to achieve them. A leader should empathize with followers and incorporate their view while making a decision.

Student 4 :  

  • I will use emotional intelligence  when managing people
  • My goals would be high but realistic 
  • All the goals would be measurable and time targeted
  • My hallmark would  be pro-activeness
  • Vision for future would always be a cornerstone of my wok as a leader 

Student 5

I believe i am extrovert and good in communicating personally and professionally. my leadership personalizing is judgmental and thinking. the leader in me innovative.
Motivation and inspiration for the team is necessary that is something i would work upon. 

 Student  6

Student 7 

1. A leader is one who is a great motivator, inspiring, and a an aspirational role model . more importantly he /she is the one who creates leaders.

2. My leadership qualities are:
a. A motivator: a key attribute, my friends and my team members associate me
b. Guide: an attitude with Never say Never ' I always try to find solution and have been a great guide whenever someone needs my presence.
c. Understanding the cultural sentiments and religious beliefs. I value everyone believes, which makes me a great team player and an easy going personality.

 Student 8
 A true leader is one who leads by example. this is something that i value and try to adopt. this ensures a very collaborative setting and helps to get in touch with the ground realities. such a collaborative style of leadership is necessary to motivate people and to earn their trust.

I am self motivated and .. I am a good team player...... I am approachable ..... I am hardworking .... I am tactful...

Student 10  

According to me, leadership or a leader is the one which shoes the right goal for a group of  people and continuously shows them the direction and motivates them to achieve it.

Leaders si the one who leads by example - exerts expert power on his group.
